With its forth edition just done, Berlin Alternative Fashion Week is now its own brand. Showcasing designers from all over the world in 3 slots during the day, the show started with conventional ideas to come to an end of really conceptual designs.

The motivation of the team is to bend the normal understanding of fashion and celebrate the different in the industry. Big influence in this edition were gender fluid looks from designers like Maison Mason, Tzuji and 8DIX. Conceptual designs were also strongly present, as in every other edition of BAFW, from Andrey Bartenev and Jack Irving.

So in order to gain some insides and understanding of the concept of BAFW, we talked with the team about where does the ideas come from, why Berlin and where to next.

How did you come up with the idea for the BAFW and what does it take to organise such event?

Adam Rose (founder of BAFW) is the man behind the idea. After years in the British fashion industry he saw a big gap in the fashion scene in Berlin and wanted to create a platform for innovative independent designers and expose them to the world.

The essentials to be able to organise an event like this is energy and passion.

Having being organising the event for more than a year now, can you compare the first event you did  and the last and tell us what has changed in your perspective?

This was our 4th show; the first one we ever did was in October 2014. If you compare the first show with the latest you  can see a massive improvement. It has now grown much bigger, more interesting people are working with us and we  welcome many more guests. It’s been a roller coaster but we have managed to create a good foundation and the future is  looking really exciting for all of us.

Considering that the main show ALCHEMY is presented in one day, I imagine not all designers that  send you a request can get a spot in that time, what are your criteria for selecting a designer for the  catwalks?

For each show we go through a careful process selecting the designers but we have no specific criteria or written  guidelines when it comes to how we select them.

Berlin itself is a very fashion alternative city, it’s not really a fashion capital, but people here have a very  specific and kind of raw sense of style, is that the inspiration behind the alternative fashion week, and  how does that blend with the city’s fashion scene in your opinion?

Berlin is a hub for creative individuals in various fields and I strongly believe that the concept of BAFW fits very well in  to the city’s fashion scene. Not only do we represent the Berlin fashion scene – we’re aiming to create a show with a large international flavor.

During the catwalks at BAFW there is always this feeling of “art-performance-meets-fashion”,  especially for the night show, is this what you are looking for?

In a sense, yes, we’re trying to break the traditional boundaries between fashion, art, performance and music.

Having been at several of your events so far, I can confirm that there is a very warm environment and  people seem to be friendlier than at other fashion events, where do you think that comes from?

Most of the people involved in the project are good friends and the direct crew is like a little family. At the end of the day  it’s more important who you do business with rather than the business you do.

Looking at the industry side of the event, are the fashion professionals interested in the alternative  fashion week and is this something you aim for or is it more for the entertainment and the visitors?

I believe everyone should be interested in a way – we’re showcasing new concepts and ideas that you don’t get at the  older more traditional fashion weeks.

What have you planned for the future of BAFW, where do you see it going?

After we established the brand here in Berlin we will expand and bring our concept to other parts of this planet – stay  tuned!
