‘Post Apocalyptic Gardening’ laid bare on the concrete floor as I passed by. A meter away, a forklift stood solid as if ready to lift debris from the ground. I instantly knew I had to find out more: this was not the usual designer presentation at a trade fair, even if the latter was the specially curated and dedicated to menswear CIFF Raven, where during Copenhagen Fashion Week (and for the first time) some of the coolest menswear designs from around the world were carefully displayed for a select number of buyers and press to view.

The brand was 424 from Los Angeles, headed by visionary Guillermo Andrade. His latest collection embodies the overwhelming darkness he sees in society nowadays. As dramatic and menacing his message is, when you look closer you will see a surprising glimpse of hope for better future. Beautifully embroidered flowers delicately wrap the cuff lining of key pieces from the collection, bringing light and breaking this otherwise very dark story.

Guillermo himself is a unique blend of pure artistic passion and relentless drive to make a difference not only for himself but also for the others. I caught up with him personally in LA where in the realm of his beautifully curated store on Fairfax Avenue, and in the company of his beloved dog Chelsea, we chatted about coffee, life in LA and what’s to come for him and his brand in the coming months.

Creating is what makes Guillermo wake up in the morning, so when I asked what drives him to do that the answer was simple: ‘the opportunity for me and the people around me to express who we are, and have fun.’ Which turns out is the only way for him to enjoy life, and if he weren’t busy creating, he would just ‘feel bad’. ‘It is a release’ of all things brewing in his mind and heart. And I could see that clearly.

What started as a small jewellery collection a few years back is now an inspiring collective housed in Guillermo’s recently refurbished and expanded store. When he showed me around his excitement and dedication to both his staff and work shown through. I was introduced to the ‘family’, all friends of his who have supported him through the years and I could see cared deeply about him: the store is indeed Guillermo’s home away from home.

Inspiration and ideas are something he thanks God for blessing him with, flowing through at speed at all times.

‘My friends and art of any kind’ inspire him. But he likes to think of the bigger picture and finds the way to incorporate what he sees in everyday life into his collections, like for example the delicately embroidered flowers for AW15 season, which were inspired by ‘these beautiful flowers I saw in the cracks of the pavement one day and I knew I wanted to find a way to show their beauty in my new collection’. ‘Contradiction, not confrontation’ also fuels him with inspiration and drive to evolve. ‘I love to voice my opinion but have the open mind to listen and gage with different views from mine’, it is something he very much enjoys and believes makes life a lot more interesting. Analysing what’s going on around him and reinterpreting it through his designs and work is what he does. ‘When I was back in school, the teacher would ask us to choose an article from the newspaper and write about it and how it made us feel…this is what I do now.’ His latest collection features printed screen grabs from news breaking TV stories on simple T-shirts, which some may find disturbing but they are ‘what happened, it was not me who did that’. And it is exactly that story telling and poignant truth that make Guillermo’s designs a unique blend of art, fashion and social stance.

He came to LA when he was only 10 and sees the city as the place that gave him ‘the opportunity to be himself and the means for him to give that (opportunity) to others’. Some of the designers he stocks in his store were discovered and nurtured by him, like Carrots by Anwar Carrot. He was also the first ever shop to sell UEG: a label from Poland whose designs play on the concept of consumption. Going through the rags it transpires the store selection is carefully narrated and features only names he has personal connection with. He even jokes that if Chelsea (his beloved dog) doesn’t like the designer, he wouldn’t choose to display the collection, that’s when I realised I should have brought some dog sweets with me!

Most of his time Guillermo spends in his store working (there is no 9-5 for him), but he does love everything French, so you could also find him drinking coffee in Zinque just down the road on Melrose Avenue. The only time his mind switches off is when he plays football: he loves the game and is a huge fan of Berbatov!

Not sure though when he will be kicking the ball anytime soon as the summer is looking pretty busy with trips to Paris, Copenhagen and London where he will open a pop up store in September. I will be sure to catch him on my home ground then, so stay tuned: more coming soon.
